He wrote more than 100 books and short stories, including the novel “2001: A Space Odyssey” and the short story “The Sentinel,” which served as the basis for the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey.” He was also a proponent of space exploration and was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to literature.
